R Kelly sentenced to 30 years in sex abuse case

Image
R Kelly was sentenced on Wednesday to 30 years in prison, after the multi-platinum R&B singer's conviction for exploiting his stardom and wealth over decades to lure women and underage girls for sex.  Kelly was convicted last September after a five-and-a-half week trial over accusations that had dogged the singer of the Grammy-winning hit I Believe I Can Fly since the early 2000s. He is among the most prominent people convicted of sexual misbehaviour during the #MeToo movement. Earlier on Wednesday, women who testified against Kelly during the trial spoke about how he had promised to mentor them and help them to attain stardom, only to subject them to degrading sexual treatment and physical harm. Many said the abuse led to mental health problems that persist. The sentence was imposed by US District Judge Ann Donnelly in Brooklyn Federal Court. Mississippi’s last abortion clinic faces tense final days

Image
A large, bearded man with wraparound sunglasses stands at the entrance of the Jackson Women’s Health Organisation, Mississippi’s last abortion clinic, and screams at a woman as she is driven into the clinic's car park.  “This is murder,” he yells. “You’re going to perish without the mercy of God.” He has draped a towel over his head to protect himself from the heat and humidity that envelop Jackson at this time of year. As he shouts Biblical scriptures, a woman wearing a rainbow-coloured jacket that reads “clinic escort” steps in front of him and holds a large mirror up to his face. On it, she has written: “You, yelling at women.” “Do you like how you look, Allan?” she asks. The two know each other by name. Following the US Supreme Court ruling last week that overturned Roe v Wade, a 1973 law that legalised abortion, Mississippi and other conservative states have moved quickly to enact bans on the procedure. Jens Stoltenberg: a man of clarity made for a crisis

Image
Jens Stoltenberg is a man for a crisis, something of a prerequisite for the role of secretary general of the military alliance Nato. He has used all his experience after nearly two decades at the top table of world politics, honed in two stints as prime minister of Norway, to steer Nato through the rough seas it has faced under his leadership. Nato’s world leaders underlined their faith in him by asking him to extend his eight-year tenure by another year after Russia’s attack on Ukraine. In so doing, Mr Stoltenberg, 63, gave up his long-held desire to become chairman of his native Norway’s central bank. The situation had given him "no choice" he said at the time, and felt it was the most important thing he could do with his life. The reason why the US, French, German and British leaders asked him to continue was clear on Tuesday evening, as he calmly sat on a stool for 30 minutes being questioned over a range of issues at the Nato forum in Madrid. Cut the karak chai as experts warn of hidden calories in some foods

Image
Hidden calories and food loaded with unseen fats are big contributors to weight gain, according to nutritionists.  From karak chai to sandwiches and smoothies, everyday foods often seen as healthy alternatives can have as much salt, sugar and fat as some of the most common fast-food staples. Typically, the recommended daily calorie intake for the average woman is about 2,000, while men, who are usually bigger, need about 2,500 calories from food each day to convert into energy. “People count calories, but not always the nutrients,” said Ilse Onderweegs, a nutritionist at ICO Healthy Living in Dubai. Britain's draughty homes stand in the way of its climate goals

Image
Poorly insulated and costly to heat homes in the UK are a major obstacle to the country's climate goals, government advisers say. There is a “shocking” gap in government efforts to ensure homes are better insulated as energy bills soar, they said. The independent Climate Change Committee, set up in 2008, said in its report that government plans for tackling global warming will not hit mandated emissions cut targets in the decades ahead. It singled out action on energy efficiency to make UK homes cheaper to heat, along with a lack of progress on farming emissions, as problem areas. In its annual report to Parliament, the committee called for action to address the rising cost of living that is in line with cutting emissions to zero overall — known as net zero — by 2050. Syria seizes record 2.3 tonnes of illicit drug captagon: Ministry

Image
Syrian counter-narcotics units seized a record haul of 2.3 tonnes of the amphetamine-type stimulant known as captagon, the interior ministry announced Wednesday. Law enforcement officers had earlier discovered 249 kilos of captagon hidden in steel machinery inside containers ready to leave the Mediterranean port of Latakia. The ensuing investigation alerted the authorities “to the existence of a warehouse containing drugs on a farm” in the nearby province of Hama, a ministry statement said. “The weight of the confiscated bags amounted to 2,103 kilos,” the statement said, adding that 10 arrests were made and several vehicles confiscated. With a kilo of captagon estimated to amount to around 6,000 pills, the cumulated number of pills seized tops 14 million, the largest recorded haul by the Syrian government in years. Spain inflation soars to 37-year high

Image
Inflation in Spain has soared to a 37-year high, reaching double digits due to rising energy and food prices, official data showed Wednesday. Inflation has soared worldwide as economies have emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic while Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has pushed commodity prices higher. Consumer prices in Spain accelerated to 10.2 percent in June on an annual basis, up from 8.7 percent in the previous month and the highest since April 1985, according to the National Statistics Institute. The rise is mainly due to increases in fuel and food prices, but the institute also noted a hike in prices in the hospitality sector in one of the world’s top tourist destinations. Core inflation, which is seasonally adjusted and excludes energy, jumped to 5.5 percent in June compared to 4.9 percent in the previous month - the highest since August 1993. Celebrity Net Worth: Kylie Jenner named youngest self-made female millionaire

Image
Once named the youngest self-made billionaire in the world, Kylie Jenner now has an estimated net worth of $600 million, down from $620m in 2021, according to a new wealth index by Forbes magazine. As with many of the world's richest people, Jenner, 24, has seen her net worth shrink over the past year, driven by the Russia-Ukraine crisis, the Covid-19 pandemic and volatile stock markets. Nevertheless, she remains the youngest person on the magazine’s annual list of self-made women with an overall ranking of 41. Jenner’s wealth stems from her make-up business, Kylie Cosmetics. She sold 51 per cent of the company to multinational beauty conglomerate Coty in 2020 for $600m. At the time, the deal valued the business at $1.2 billion. Jenner earned $340m from the sale. However, filings by Coty later indicated that the size of the business was smaller and less profitable than previously estimated, Forbes reported in 2020, when it revised down her net worth to less than $900m. In 2020, s

WTO members agree to temporarily lift Covid vaccine patents to tackle vaccine inequality

Image
The World Trade Organisation agreed on Friday to temporarily lift patents on Covid-19 vaccines after two years of bruising negotiations, but experts expressed scepticism that the deal will have a major impact on global vaccination inequality. The unprecedented agreement, sealed by all 164 WTO members after late-night overtime talks, will grant developing countries the right to produce Covid-19 vaccines for five years "without the consent of the right holder". Since October 2020, South Africa and India have called for intellectual property rights for coronavirus vaccines to be temporarily lifted so they can boost production to address the gaping inequality in access between rich and poor nations. But Friday's compromise fell short of their earlier requests that the waiver apply to all countries – and also cover Covid tests and treatments. Bitcoin drops below $20,000 to lowest since December 2020

Image
Bitcoin dropped below $20,000 on Saturday to its lowest level in 18 months, extending its slide as investors pull back from riskier assets amid rising interest rates. The biggest cryptocurrency was down 7.1 percent to $18,993 at 0906 GMT, having earlier touched $18,732, its lowest since December 2020. It is down about 59 percent this year, while rival cryptocurrency Ethereum-backed ether is down 73 percent. SEBI sues Sahara for Rs 62,600 crore over investors' dues, moves SC

Image
NEW DELHI:  In yet another setback for scandal-ridden Sahara Group, India's capital market regulator SEBI has moved the Supreme Court asking it to direct the company's controversial chief Subrata Roy and two of his companies to deposit a whopping Rs 62,602 crore that it says is due to its investors. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) in its plea said that if the parties are unable deposit the amount demanded, then they should be taken into custody. Since 2016, Sahara chief Roy has been out on bail after being arrested in March 2014 for failing to attend a contempt of court hearing.  In its petition, SEBI told the apex court that Sahara had failed to comply with the 2012 and 2015 court orders to deposit the entire amount it had collected from investors along with a 15 per cent annual interest payment. Sahara, however, has repeatedly denied the allegations of fraud. Sahara had previously told the court that it had refunded most of the money it collected from invest

Commonwealth Games scam – a legal timeline

Image
The 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games have been marred by corruption and mismanagement, which have skewed India’s reputation as a nation ravaged by high levels of fraud and misuse. Commonwealth Games was founded in 1930 and is an internationally successful multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth Nations Games. The event is organized every four years by the Traditional Wealth Games Federations. CWG scam was one of the biggest Indian scams involving rounding of Rs. 70,000 crores. Just half of the amount allocated was estimated to be spent on Indian sportspeople. The athletes were supposedly forced to move from those allocated by the authorities to shabby flats. Reports of the Central Vigilance Commission revealed that Suresh Kalmadi, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Games, had offered Swiss Timings a contract of Rs 141 crore for its time-limiting equipment, which was unduly high by Rs.95 crore. All the suspects, including Kalmadi, have been charged with crim

Macron battling to avoid hung parliament and unpalatable deals

Image
From the glitzy Mediterranean resort of Saint-Tropez to working-class suburbs of north-eastern Paris, French voters have exposed the frailty of consensus politics and the rise of extremes. A mixture of apathy, disappointment and outright hostility could deprive President Emmanuel Macron of his majority in parliament when the decisive second round of voting takes place on Sunday. Amid mutual mudslinging, with the far right and far left denouncing each other and Mr Macron’s camp labelling both as threats to civil order, an uncomfortable era of instability looms for France. Opinion polls suggest a hung parliament as the most likely outcome, forcing the newly re-elected president to turn enemies into allies if he hopes to see his policies enacted. Ketan Parekh Scam - The Infamous Stock Market Fraud!

Demystifying how Ketan Parekh Scam was executed: One of the biggest stock market frauds that became an eye-opening event for not only the equity investors but also for the Securities Exchange Board of India and such other regulatory authorities was Ketan Parekh Scam. The Market Rip-off was done in such a way that he was able to make multiple times the annual return on the stocks he manipulated. Ketan Parekh was the God for many investors as he created a delusion that whatever he touched turned into Gold and whatever he wished the market seemed to grant him. Just within two years of time, Ketan deceived so many investors as well as banks and the stock market that it became a case study for many these days. The stock market has the power to make someone rich and the others lose their money in just a matter of seconds. On one hand, we have examples of people successfully trading in the stock market such as Warren Buffet, Carl Icahn and George Soros who became multi-millionaires by investi

Battle for Severodonetsk: 40 children among 500 civilians trapped in chemical plant

Image
Forty children are among hundreds of civilians trapped in a chemical plant in Severodonetsk, with the last bridge to the eastern Ukrainian city destroyed by Russian forces. The city has in recent weeks been the site of intense violence and has become a focal point for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ambitions to seize enough territory so that he can increase pressure on Kyiv. Sergiy Gaiday, the Governor of the Luhansk region, said the Azot plant was under heavy bombardment by Russian forces, putting the lives of those trapped inside at risk. "About 500 civilians remain on the grounds of the Azot plant. Forty of them are children," he said. The situation is similar to Russia's siege of the Azovstal steel plant in the south-eastern city of Mariupol, where hundreds of fighters and civilians were holed up for weeks with limited food, water and medical supplies. Ukrainian fighters there surrendered in May, bringing an end to the most brutal siege of the war to date. Read Mo

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described Ukraine's defence of Severondonetsk a fight for "literally every metre". Meanwhile, Finnish President Sauli Niinisto claimed on Monday said that both Ukraine and Russia are using heavier weapons, including in Russia's case thermobaric bombs. "We are supporting Ukraine with increasingly heavy weaponry. And on the other hand Russia has also begun to use very powerful weapons, thermobaric bombs that are in fact weapons of mass destruction," Mr Niinisto said during security policy talks at his summer residence in Naantali, Finland. Canadian who drove van into Toronto crowds given life sentence

Image
A Canadian man who in 2018 rammed his rental van into a crowd of pedestrians in downtown Toronto, killing 11 people, was sentenced Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 25 years. Alek Minassian, who was 25 at the time of the attack, was found guilty by a Canadian judge just over a year ago, in March 2021. On April 23, 2018, Minassian drove a white rental van at full speed down streets and sidewalks in the Canadian metropolis, aiming at passers-by for a little more than a mile. Ten people were killed and 16 injured in the attack -- but the death toll rose to 11 at the end of October 2021 when an injured woman who had spent more than three years in hospital also succumbed to her injuries. UK economy shrinks for second month in a row in April, weighed down by inflation

Image
British economic output declined for a second month in a row in April, weighed down by decades-high inflation, official data showed Monday. Gross domestic product fell 0.3 percent in April after a drop of 0.1 percent in March, the Office for National Statistics said in a statement. Output in the services, production and construction sectors fell -- “the first time that all main sectors have contributed negatively to a monthly GDP estimate since January 2021,” the ONS said, as the data added to fears of recession. The ONS noted that “businesses continued to report the impact of price increases and supply chain shortages.” The data comes as the Bank of England is set to raise its main interest rate at a fifth straight meeting Thursday in a bid to cool the pace of price rises.
